COVID-19 Community Clean-up Project
This project will consist of three (3) teams of laborers who will coordinate a clean-up effort in the community of Kotzebue. Removal of small and large equipment, cleaning of graveyards, and demolition of dilapidated buildings will be conducted over the next several weeks as part of the public health and safety efforts.
There are no eligibility requirements to benefit from the community clean-up project. More information regarding the sections being cleaned each week will be made available on the qiracovid.org website.
Iglut will receive upgrades to the washer/dryer units to ensure our elder residents have the highest quality, commercial grade sanitation equipment available for their use. There will also be upgrades to the water and heating system that will allow for continued and improved access to hot water and heat in the coming months.
Residential Cleaning Supplies Project
Every household in the community of Kotzebue will have the opportunity to receive the following cleaning supplies:
- Hand sanitizer
- Disinfecting wipes
- Paper towel
- Bar soap
- Trash Bags
Enrolled tribal members outside the community of Kotzebue will have access to cleaning supplies on a case by case basis and should contact the COVID-19 Project Manager for further details on how to receive this benefit.
The Native Village of Kotzebue recognizes the importance of assisting the homeless population and ensuring access to food, water and shelter. A contribution was made to the Northwest Alaska Homeless Coalition to support their efforts in our community.
Northwest Arctic Borough School District Support
Hundreds of students in the community of Kotzebue have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and their learning has shifted greatly. To support the remote learning that may be required during this time, the Native Village of Kotzebue has purchased iPads for the teachers.
Sturdy, padded backpacks have also been purchased for every student enrolled in June Nelson Elementary and Kotzebue Middle/High School.
Tribal members who contract COVID-19 and require the two week quarantine will receive additional support from the Native Village of Kotzebue on a case by case basis. Please contact the COVID-19 Project Manager for further details.
Nikaitchuat Ilisagvait Improvements
Students enrolled at Nikaitchuat Ilisagvait face similar challenges with distance education. Students will be provided with iPads to assist with remote lessons throughout the year as it relates to COVID-19. The school will get a deep clean prior to school starting and safety measures will be implemented to minimize the risk of exposure to COVID-19. Playground improvements will be made to allow for adequate and regular sanitation of equipment.
